ELKHART -- Herbert D. "Herb" Stockwell, 79, of Elkhart, died at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 12, 2008) in Riverside Village.

He was born July 31, 1929, in Elkhart to Ray Lewis and Essie Mae (Fashbaugh) Stockwell. On Oct. 5, 1969, he married Elizabeth M. Terry in Elkhart.

She survives along with two sons, Robert L. Terry of Texas and Gregory A. Terry of Cassopolis, Mich.; two daughters, Jane E. Grant of Elkhart and Rose M. (Mike) Stewart of Bristol; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis Stockwell; and three sisters, Lucille D. Welch, Dorothy VanFerson and Mildred Stockwell.

Mr. Stockwell was a self-employed truck driver for many years and had driven for several area businesses. He drove more than 1 million miles without a ticket or accident and was very proud of that accomplishment. He was a graduate of Elkhart High School and loved to collect toy trains and antique cars.

A gathering of friends and family will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. There will be no services. Cremation will follow, with burial at a later date in Rice Cemetery.
