Helena M. Benway, 77, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 21, 2023 at Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart.

Helena was born on October 18, 1945 in Boston, MA to Dave and Helen Power. She was married to the love of her life, Robert H. Benway whom survives.

Helena is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Dave and sister, Betty.

Helena is survived by her husband of 38 years, Bob Benway of Elkhart; 3 nephews, Danny McCarty, Francis McCarty and George Power; 1 niece, Nancy McCarty; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Hazel, Teriele, Harriet, Paul, Norris, Allen and Liona and many friends.

Helena was the daughter of a shipbuilder in the U.S. Navy during WWII. She grew up in Newfoundland, Canada. After schooling, she returned to the USA.

Helena retired as a medical receptionist after almost 30 years at Elkhart Clinic. Helen and her husband Bob owned Love Your Pets among 2 other businesses at the Shipshewanna Flea Market for many years. Helena and Bob also donated their time to worthy causes such as The Red Barn Shelter and Meals on Wheels.

Helena enjoyed her flowers and vegetable garden. She also enjoyed square dancing.

Helena loved life and all animals. She will be greatly missed.

A gathering of family and friends for Helena will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, IN 46514.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be directed to The Humane Society of Elkhart County or Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.
