GOSHEN -- Grethel M. "Mae" Hall, 89, of Goshen, passed away at midnight Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at the Courtyard Healthcare Center in Goshen.
She was born Sept. 3, 1921, in Polaski County, to Thomas Allen and Cuba Grethel (Bowman) Smith and later married Edward August Hall.
Survivors include two daughters, Edna Mae Fields of New Paris and Carolyn Sue Spickard of Waubun, Minn.; son James T. (Joanne) Hall of Griffith; two brothers, Thomas A. (Catherine) Smith of Gary and Gerald A. Smith of Lakeville; sister Nancy L. Cox of Roselawn; five grandchildren, Michael Fout, Brian Fout, Randy Fields, Mark Fields and Andrew Spickard; several great-grandchildren; and her best friend, Jeanne Laich of Griffith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward August Hall; two brothers, David Smith and Robert Smith; sister Margaret L. Reeves; son Edward L. Hall; and a grandson, Scott Fields.
She was the owner and manager of M & E Drive-In located in Griffith for 11 years. It was known for the "Best Tacos In The World."
Mae loved spending time working crossword puzzles, croqueting, knitting, gardening and camping. She will always be remembered for always doing for others without asking for anything in return.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2011, at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville. Chaplain Bob Puhr will officiate. Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
