Obituary

ELKHART — Glenn A. Lookenott, Lt. Col., Ret., 83, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Elkhart, passed away Thursday afternoon, May 12, at Elkhart General Hospital.

Glenn was born April 17, 1933, in Newark, Ohio, to the late Arthur and Cora Adelaide (Preston) Lookenott.

Glenn graduated from Grandville (Ohio) High School. He was awarded a football scholarship to Indiana University in Bloomington, where he played as the quarterback until he was drafted in the U.S. Army. Glenn served honorably from April 1953 until May 1973. He served two tours of duty during the Korean Conflict and two tours during the Vietnam War. Glenn retired from the Army with many decorations, medals and awards, including a Bronze Star and the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Marlene P. (Patterson) Slayter, on Sept. 10, 2000, in Elkhart. She survives, as well as his children, Glynis Pope of Lawton, Okla., LuAnne (Bob) Taylor of Stone Mountain, Ga., Mindy Fitzpatrick of Temple, Texas, Trish (Louie) Tallerico of Manteca, Calif., and Karen (Juan) Lopez Bentley of Lawton, Okla.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sister Lois Blaney of Newark; and a brother Lloyd (Carol) Lookenott of Grandville. Also surviving are his stepchildren, Games (Victoria) Slayter of Mishawaka, John (Julie) Slayter and Julie (Craig) Lochmandy, both of Elkhart; seven stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, a brother, Don Lookenott and sister Phyllis Shephard preceded him in death.

Glenn and Marty enjoyed 15 years of retirement and an active social life at The Landings in Fort Myers. Glenn was a lay-minister in the Methodist faith, he officiated many events for his friends and family. Glenn was an avid golfer and very active in the Landings Golf Association. In Elkhart, he was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

In honoring Glenn's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration service will be at a later date.
