GOSHEN -- Gertrude M. Kreider, 88, of Goshen, formerly of Elkhart, passed away Monday (Aug. 9, 2010) at 7:55 p.m. at The Maples at Waterford Crossing.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1921, in Walkerton, to the late John and Ella Oma (Ogg) Carden. She married George W. Laymon. He died in 1962. She married Russell E. Kreider in 1965. He passed away on April 26, 2005.

Surviving are a son, Douglas (Brenda) Laymon of Goshen, and her daughter, Joy (Scott) Stenger of Fishers. Four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a sister, Vada Andersen of Chicago, survive as well.

She was preceded in death by eight sisters and a brother.

Gertrude was a homemaker and formerly worked as a press operator for Manion Forum in South Bend. She was a longtime member of Elkhart Church of Christ and a member of Order of the Eastern Star Starlight Chapter 181. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed winters in Port Charlotte, Fla., for more than 21 years.

Friends may call one hour prior to the 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, celebration service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Gertrude's family cannot thank enough the wonderful care she received from the hospice nurses and loving caregivers and staff at The Maples in Goshen.
