Gale Denise (Modjeska) York, 65, passed away Saturday, January 20th, 2024 in South Bend where she had been a resident for the last 4 months.

Gale was born on May 3, 1958 in Phelps, Wisconsin to Roy and Eleanor Bessen. She grew up in Trout Creek, MI where she proudly lived as a "Yooper" until she moved to Elkhart in her early 20's. She was a part of Ewen – Trout Creek's graduating class of 1976 and later received an associates degree in early childhood education through Indiana University, South Bend. Before moving to Indiana she was a proud employee of the Forest Service in the Upper Peninsula where she learned various skills that stuck with her throughout life. Gale was a dedicated stay at home mom before going on to apply her degree to being a preschool teacher for several years and then eventually becoming a caregiver for the elderly. She had an admirable way of turning any situation into her own personal adventure. Gale will be most remembered for her loving devotion to her kids, her beautiful smile and laugh, being the life of EVERY party, and never knowing a stranger.

Gale is survived by her daughter Kristen (Seth) Baldridge of Elkhart, IN; son Dusten (Shelby) Modjeska of Elkhart, IN; brother, Alan (Carole) Bessen of Kentucky; sisters, Joan (George) Smart of Presque Isle, MI, Mary (Mark) Kerner of Kenton, MI, and Jane (Fred) Osinkski of Kenton, MI; grandchildren Hadlee and Holden Baldridge; and multiple nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and granddaughter, Bailey.

A local Celebration of life with take place at a later date. Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart is in charge of assisting the family. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association. www.alz.org
