Obituary

Frank E. Atkinson, 96, of Elkhart, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart.

Frank was born in Monroe, LA on May 5, 1930 to the late, Hubert and Vivian M. (Barnaby) Atkinson. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Ann (Steffel) Atkinson on December 14, 2006.

He is also preceded in death by his son, Rodney A. Atkinson and brother, Robert Lewis.

Frank is survived by his children, Michael H. Atkinson, Victor L. Atkinson, Debra K. McBrier and Barbara S. Byler; sisters, Helen Cook, Mary (Tom) Davis and Dorothy (Bill) Willits; 3 grandchildren, Carl (Kathy) Byler, Cari N. Byler and Krystale Atkinson and 6 great grandchildren.

Frank spent years on the open road as a truck driver for Dumor, Monteith, Reece Axel, Ponderosa and for Ryder for Monaco and moving cars for Lochmandy motors until his health declined.

A man of deep faith, Frank and his beloved wife, Dot, were dedicated, long-time members of the Northside Church of God. In his spare time, he was an avid fisherman who found his greatest joy on the water and surrounded by the family he anchored. Frank was a huge Notre Dame football fan always cheering his team on whenever they played.

He was a man with a big heart, known as a jack of all trades who was always willing to help anyone in need.

A Memorial Service for Frank will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, IN 46514 with Pastor Clay Powell officiating.

Friends and family may gather with the family from 11:00am to 1:00pm before the start of the service at the funeral home.

A private interment will be at a later date at Rice Cemetery.
