ELKHART — Fannie Mae Watson, 86, of Elkhart, went to be with the Lord at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at Golden Living Center following an extended illness.
She was born in Tennessee on July 15, 1928, to the late Gert Payne and Joe Anna Obie.
She later married Jimmie T. Watson on April 8, 1949, in Arkansas. He passed away in Elkhart in August 2003.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Jimmy, Robert and Pastor Jerry (Earnestine) Watson, all of Elkhart; Ray, Paul and Dewayne (Davetta) Watson, all of Champaign, Ill., and James (Terri) Watson of Jackson, Mich.; and daughters Everlena Suggs and Shirley (Willie) Edwards, both of Elkhart, and Kathy (John) Tucker of Champaign. A multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles survive to cherish her memory as well.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
A celebration of Fannie's life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, 2205 Oakland Ave., Elkhart, with viewing beginning at 10 a.m. Fannie's son, Pastor Jerry Watson of Progressive Church of Elkhart, will officiate. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola.
Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart has been assisting the family with arrangements.
Fannie was a housekeeper for Day's Inn for many years, retiring in the early 1990s. A devout Christian lady, she attended Progressive Church of Elkhart and was a "church mother" there.
She was also a church missionary and enjoyed sharing God's word with others, healing many a broken life through her unique ministry of compassion and friendship. Her compassion for others carried over during her stay at Golden Living Center, where she made many friends among the staff and residents.
