Amacher

Known as "Lyn" to friends and "Evelyn" to family, she was born on Feb. 20, 1920, in Rochester, Ind., the daughter of Vernie and Pearl (Wright) Bowen.
One of five children, she was the sister to Esther Plain of Munster, Ind., former Indiana Governor and Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services Dr. Otis (Carol) Bowen of Bremen, Ind., and Sara Jane Scandling of South Bend, Ind.
On Feb. 13, 1944, Evelyn married Earl Robert Amacher, who preceded her in death in 2005.
She is survived by her daughter, Patty L. (Dale) Bingaman of Elkhart; three granddaughters, Christina Lynn Roach of Elkhart, Melinda Kay Collins of Prestonburg, Ky., and Marlina Sue (Jonathan) Chapman of Garrett, Ky.; five great-grandchildren, Tiffany Lynne, Tori Elaine, Tyler Patrick, Makayla Dawn and Bailey Clayton; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn's earliest years were spent in Fulton County. She attended schools in Fulton, Francesville and Crown Point where her father taught math and shop class, while also coaching the high school basketball teams. She graduated from Crown Point High School in 1937 and from Manchester College in 1942, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree.
After college, Evelyn taught high school English and Literature and retired from Wheeler High School in Valparaiso, Ind. She was a model in Chicago in the early 1950s, where her photographs were seen in many publications. She was a member of the Billy Graham Choir throughout the 1950s and attended the Moody Bible Institute in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Mich., in the 1960s.
Evelyn joined the Reformed Church of North American Missions in Holland in 1966, and was a missionary at the Reformed Church School at the Annville Institute Boarding School in Annville, Ky., from 1966-1968. She also was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association, Republican Women for Bowen and was the "family" photographer. Lyn enjoyed sewing, playing cards and Scrabble with her close friends.
Please gather with her family and friends at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2007. A service to celebrate her life will be on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home, where friends may also call for one hour prior to her service. The Rev. Karen Strietelmeier of Zion Lutheran Church in Bristol, Ind., will officiate. Burial and graveside services will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Rochester, Ind.
