ELKHART -- Eugene Harmon, 89, of Elkhart, passed away Monday evening (Feb. 14, 2011) at Valley View Health Care Center.
He was born July 20, 1921, in Elkhart to the late Forrest and Ethel (Edsall) Harmon. He married Eva J. Hoffman on March 25, 1949, in Elkhart. She passed away Aug. 28, 2010.
He is survived by his sons, Mark E. Harmon of Elkhart and Michael (Rhonda) Harmon of Cassopolis, Mich.; and two daughters, Jana (Jerry) Workman of Goshen and Cynthia (Carl) Thurston of Elkhart. Eleven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren survive as well. Eugene was preceded in death by a sister, Arlene Harmon, and brothers Dean and Howard Harmon.
Eugene worked for Adams & Westlake LTD for 40 years and retired from R.E. Jackson Transportation Manufacturing Company where he worked in sales for 10 years. He was a former member of the Elkhart Elks and Moose Lodge and the VFW. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. Eugene loved all children and volunteered as a Red Coat at Elkhart General Hospital for many years.
Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Billings Funeral Home. A procession will form at Billings Funeral Home at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, for the graveside service which will begin at 10 a.m. at Rice Cemetery. Pastor David Hudson, along with the U.S Naval Burial Honors Detail, will officiate.
