Elvin E. "Gene" Wagner, 80, of Elkhart passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at his home.

Gene was born on January 21, 1945 to the late James A. Wagner and Fern C. (Thompson) Wagner in Dubois County, IN.

Gene married the love of his life, Faye (Galloway) Wagner on July 7, 1974 in Carroll County, IN.

Gene is preceded in death by his son, Doug Gunter; mother-in-law, Alberta; infant granddaughter, Courtney Galloway and sister, Ruthie Julius.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Faye Wagner; children, Mindy (Brian) Horsch, James (Shannan) Wagner, Todd Galloway, Beth Bader, Tina Gunter and Andy (Lori) Wagner; sister, Rosie Layton; brother-in-law, Ray Luse and 67 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gene was a small engine mechanic then entered into the manufacturing field. He retired in 2010 as a maintenance technician at Dexter Rim and Wheel.

Gene was an avid fisherman and belonged to Southwest Michigan Steelheaders. His handiwork could be found as the proprietor of Genes Custom Rods where he built and repaired custom fishing rods made to suit the fisherman's needs.

Gene also was a talented mechanic, working on dragsters and race cars. He would often attend the Russell's M40 speedway in Michigan. In his spare time, Gene also enjoyed woodworking and riding his bike.

Gene had strong beliefs and he let everyone know. He also had a big heart and was proud of his large, extended family in which he treated every one of them as his own.

A Funeral Service for Gene will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, IN 46514 with Pastor Jeremy Sarber officiating.

Visitation for friends and family will be held 2 hours prior to the start of the service from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the funeral home.

Casual attire is highly encouraged.

Burial will be at Rossville Cemetery at a later date.
