MIDDLEBURY — Elsie Vera Bell, 88, of Middlebury and formerly of Elkhart, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, at Greenleaf Health Campus in Elkhart.
She was born May 26, 1926, in Leicester, England, to Wilfred and Elsie Dexter.
Vera came to the U.S. in 1947. She married Mario J. Bell on June 14, 1947. They moved to Elkhart from Crabtree, Pa., in 1949.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Mario, who passed away Nov. 9, 2013; son James Bell in 1983; a sister, Margaret; and two brothers, Roy and Allen.
She leaves behind her two daughters, Lynda Bell and Peggy Mansell, both of Middlebury; a niece, Jennifer Rose of Elkhart; and brothers Ron and Tony, both of Leicester.
Vera worked for several years at Excel Corp. prior to owning a business with her husband, Mario's Riverview Grocery, which she and Mario operated from 1962 to 1977. In December 1978 they opened a small meat market and deli on Bower Street in Elkhart until 1987. Vera then worked for her daughter at Mario's in Elkhart until September 2013.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place.
Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
Arrangements are under the care of Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart.
