ELKHART — Ellen Mae Bigler, 85, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully from natural causes, surrounded by her family, at 10:50 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, at the Greenleaf Health Campus of Elkhart.
She was born May 25, 1929, in Elkhart, to the late Howard W. and Lois A. (Stocker) Rosentreter.
She married Willis J. Bigler in Elkhart on Nov. 3, 1949. He passed away in 2003.
Surviving are her daughters, Elizabeth A. Bigler of Mishawaka and Rebecca S. (Randy) Mohler of Elkhart; sons William E. (Nancy) Bigler of Granger, Texas, and Bennett D. (Rose Engelbrecht) Bigler of Wonderlake, Ill.; grandchildren Stephanie Sanford and Martin Bigler; great-granddaughter Heidi L. Bigler; and great-great-grandson Hayden Wright.
Preceding Ellen in death were her sisters, Elecia Heiner and Beverly Rosentreter; brother Robert Rosentreter; and granddaughter Heidi C. Bigler.
A celebration of Ellen's life will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart. The funeral service will be there at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, with visitation beginning one hour prior. Pastor Tracy Forbes of Cedar Road Missionary Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart.
Ellen was employed by the Elkhart Community School System as a cafeteria worker for over 20 years. She also played piano for several area churches and loved to garden, work in the yard and do all types of puzzles. She attended Cedar Road Missionary Church and was an avid dog and bird lover.
