Obituary

ELKHART — Devoted Christian woman, patient wife, loving mother, adoring grandmother, caring sister and thoughtful friend, Ella Mae (Barnett) Hurt, 88, of Elkhart, departed this life at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at Greenleaf Health Campus.

Ella Mae was born Feb. 13, 1927, in Huntingdon, Tenn., to the late Rev. Edward and Lillian (Smith) Barnett.

Her siblings include Mildred (Barnett) Tharpe, Marie (Barnett) Ward and Edward Barnett Jr., who all survive and mourn her loss.

She graduated from high school and married fellow schoolmate James Franklin Hurt in 1946. They were married for 65 years until James' passing in 2012. To this union, five sons were born: Charles Franklin (Rochelle), James Edward (Sharon), Richard Lee, Danny Ray and Dennis Eugene. All five sons survive. They will cherish their mother's memory forever.

In addition to her five sons and siblings, Ella Mae is survived by her 16 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Landrea and James.

She was a member of Canaan Baptist Church, serving in the women's missionary group until her health declined.

Ella Mae had a warm smile and was well-loved by those who knew her.

Ella Mae also worked in various domestic capacities in the Elkhart community, including the former Waterfall Restaurant, Elkhart Rehabilitation Center, Greenleaf Health Campus and in the homes of area families. Ella Mae continued to work well into her 80s, retiring in 2012.

Outside of work, Ella Mae enjoyed cooking, traveling, playing bingo, gardening, thrift shopping, and spending time with her family and dear friends.

A ceremony celebrating Ella Mae's life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at Canaan Baptist Church, 933 Fieldhouse Ave., Elkhart. Visitation will occur an hour prior, beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola.

Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.

The family thanks everyone who provided love, support and caregiving as Ella Mae faced health challenges. Special appreciation to sons Danny and Dennis, who ensured that Ella Mae's health care and other personal needs were consistently met in recent years.
