ELKHART -- Elizabeth A. White, 90, of Elkhart, died at 9:23 a.m. Sunday (May 17, 2009) at the home of her son, Richard, after an extended illness.

She was born on July 21, 1918, in Elkhart, to Roy E. and Maggie (Lynn) Bates. She married Maynard Earl White on April 23, 1941, in Old Monroe, Mo. He died in April 2007, in Elkhart.

Surviving is one daughter, Kathryn E. (Edward) Couture of Canton, Mich.; two sons, Kenneth W. (Marcia) of Falls Church, Va., and Richard R. (Linda) of Elkhart; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

An infant son, M. Earl, preceded her in death.

Mrs. White graduated second in her class at Elkhart High School in 1936 and received her RN degree from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1940. She was working in the emergency room at Elkhart General Hospital when she married her husband, an officer in the Army Air Corps. She lived throughout the U.S., England and Germany during their 66 years of marriage. She served as chairwoman for the USAF Officer's Wife's Club, past president of Toastmistresses and served as a denmother for Cub Scouts for the National Capital Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. She and her husband retired to the Elkhart area in 1973. She worked at the REMIC Corp. of Elkhart, a family business, until it closed in 1994. She also traveled extensively.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, and for one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 400 Mishawaka Road, Elkhart. The Rev. Don Reed will officiate. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.
