Obituary

ELKHART — Elizabeth "Libby" Ann Hadley, 85, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday, June 19, at Elkhart Hospice House.

She was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Dunkirk, N.Y., to Ferdinand and Elsie (Burns) Schmatz.

Survivors include three sons, Gilbert J. Hadley of Jones, Mich., and Brian J. Hadley and Kevin J. Hadley, both of Elkhart; two sisters, Janet Cadwallader of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and Mary Nicholson of Buffalo, N.Y.; two brothers, Michael (Chrystal) Schmatz of Elkhart and James (Ruth) Schmatz of Akron, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Kevin (Amber) Hadley, Brandon Hadley, Amber Hadley and Ashley Hadley, all of Elkhart; great-grandson Hunter Hadley of Elkhart; two great-granddaughters, Sarah Lay and Emma Hadley, both of Elkhart; and a sister-in-law, Joanne Schmatz of Mishawaka.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. Hadley; son Christopher J. Hadley; and brother Phillip Schmatz.

Libby was a graduate of Fredonia State University of New York. She spent several years working as a teacher for the New York Public School System. Prior to her retirement, she was employed with the Council on Aging of Elkhart County as its program director.

Her community involvement was extensive and included organizations such as CETA, Legal Services, Tolson Center Golden Angels, Homeless Coalition, RSVP, Elkhart County Resource Directory, Church Community Services, Carrier Watch and Alzheimer's Memory Walk.

Libby was awarded a key to the City of Elkhart by former Mayor Jim Perron.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, June 23, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, with a prayer vigil beginning at 7:45 p.m.

The family will also receive friends one hour prior to a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1108 S. Main St., Elkhart.

The Rev. Glenn Kohrman will officiate. Interment of her cremated remains will be in St. Vincent Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Foundation or St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
