ELKHART — Edwin D. VanRyn, 87, of Elkhart, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2012.
A gathering of family and friends for Edwin will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012, at the Maple Lane Apartments Clubhouse, 2001 Sugar Maple Lane, Elkhart. Billings Funeral Home assisted the family.

ELKHART — Edwin D. VanRyn, 87, of Elkhart, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Detroit to the late John D. and Maria (Gerards) VanRyn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Katherine VanRyn in 1995 from cystic fibrosis, and brother John VanRyn.
Edwin graduated from DeLaSalle High School, and at the age of 18, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was stationed at the University of Notre Dame as part of the V-12 program then went on to Quantico, Va.
He married Patricia "Pat" Forbes on June 10, 1945, in Mishawaka.
She survives, as well as daughter Kristine (Neal) Littler and son Dr. David (Lisa) VanRyn. He also leaves three grandchildren, Melissa (Don) White, Todd Clark and Leigh VanRyn; a special niece, Therese (Rick) Ainsworth; and three great-grandchildren.
Edwin graduated in 1949 from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in architecture and designed numerous schools in the Michiana area. He was a member of St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church. Edwin was active in local service clubs and loved fishing, but was happiest spending time with his grandchildren and family.
At his request, cremation has taken place at Altera Cremation Service under the direction and care of Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
