ELKHART -- Edwin L. "Ed" Huot, 83, of Elkhart, died at 9:05 p.m. Friday (Jan. 1, 2010) in his home after an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 1, 1926, in Red Lake Falls, Minn., to Theodore and Blanche W. (Patnode) Huot. On Aug. 22, 1953, in Elkhart, he married Betty J. Ferro.
She survives along with three daughters, Diana L. (Jeff) Peat of Elkhart, and Cindy A. (Greg) Dittlinger and Jody L. (Mike) Mason, both of Fishers; and nine grandchildren.
Three brothers, Martin, Robert and Donovan Huot; and two sisters, Marie O'Brien and Evelyn Couglin, preceded him in death.
Mr. Huot worked for several radio stations before coming to Elkhart as an announcer for WTRC in 1951. He retired from there in 1991 as vice president and general manager.
He was a charter member and producer of the "Concert on the Green" weekly summertime concerts and a consistent promoter of the Elkhart Jazz Festival. He was a former member of the Elkhart Elks Lodge 425, Elkhart Civic Theatre and was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, serving a lector there for many years.
Mr. Huot served in the Navy during World War II aboard ship in the Pacific Theater, participating in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. He was an avid reader, gardener, fisherman and had a great appreciation for music. He enjoyed Elkhart parks and the RiverWalk, as well as the abundant wildlife he observed from his deck.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. A vigil prayer service will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends also may call for 30 minutes prior to the 10 a.m. Wednesday funeral service at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1405 N. Main St. The Rev. Bill Sullivan of St. Thomas will officiate. Burial with naval military honors by the U.S. Navy Burial Detail and DAV Chapter 19 will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery, Elkhart.
Memorials may be given to Women's Care Center, 229 Marion St., Elkhart.
