ELKHART -- E. Ellowee Mayes, 88, of Elkhart, formerly of Wolcottville, died at 8:36 p.m. Sunday (July 26, 2009) in Riverside Village.

She was born April 8, 1921, in Elkhart to Willard and SaDessa (James) Heminger. On Dec. 1, 1945, she married Roland Mayes in Shipshewana. He died in March 2003.

Mrs. Mayes is survived by one daughter, Marsha (Gwyn) Bontrager of Shipshewana; one son, Gregory (Colleen) Mayes of Goshen; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Maralynn (Jerry) Bushong of Elkhart; and three brothers, James (Nina) Heminger of Jimtown, Norman (Jean) Heminger of Elkhart and Jack (Joy) Heminger of Crown Point.

One sister, Wanda Heminger, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Mayes was a homemaker, but for many years she helped her husband at the family business, Mayes Pharmacy, in Wolcottville. She was a 1939 graduate of Shipshewana Scott High School and formerly sang with the Sweet Adelines, Alma, Mich. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Friends may call Thursday from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. The Rev. Mick Sommers, chaplain at Harbour House Hospice, will officiate. Entombment will follow in Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, Rice Cemetery.
