ELKHART — Douglas MacArthur "Poppy" Buckley, 73, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at his home with his family at his side following an extended illness at 11:29 a.m. Friday, June 10.
He was born in Mammoth, W. Va., on Aug. 17, 1942, to the late Ernest and Margaret (Sizemore) Buckley, and later married Alma L. Hudnall in Ward, W. Va., on Aug. 17, 1967. She survives at home after 49 wonderful years of marriage.
Also surviving are his children, Kimberly Buckley and Douglas M. (Cherene) Buckley, both of Elkhart; brothers Albert "Byrne" (Jean) Buckley of Elkhart, Dwight "Ike" (Judy) Buckley of Niceville, Fla., and Robert (Arlene) Buckley of Concord, Calif.; sister Virginia "Patsy" Hager of Charleston, W. Va.; grandchildren Justin (Adreanna) Buckley of Edwardsburg, Mich., Chelsea Williamson of Temple, Texas, and Marie Buckley of Niles, Mich.; great-granddaughter Serenity Buckley; and special family friend Pastor "O.D." C. Diggins of South Bend, who will also officiate Poppy's services.
Two sisters and four brothers precede him in death.
Poppy's life will be celebrated with a memorial gathering of family and friends at Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 15. A brief word of prayer will be given by Pastor Diggins just prior to the end of the celebration. In accordance with his wishes, Poppy has been cremated.
Poppy was a machinist with Precision Industries of Elkhart (formerly Federal Press) for over 30 years. Jovial and fun-loving, he enjoyed his morning crossword puzzle, catching a good program on TV and spending time with his family and close friends. Extra free time would usually involve a handful of scratch-off tickets or a game of putt-putt golf. He will be best remembered for his ability to laugh even at the worst of times and for his smile and humor that lit up a room.
