ELKHART — Dortha Volain Niccum, 97, of Elkhart, passed away from natural causes at Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart at 11:43 a.m. March 8.
She was born Sept. 5, 1916, in Elkhart to the late Charles A. and Dora M. (Wolfe) Gilbert.
She later married George V. Niccum on June 20, 1936, in Elkhart, where he died in 1992.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Arthur and Kenneth Gilbert.
Surviving are her son, Wayne V. Niccum of Elkhart; her daughter, Kathleen R. Batti of Franklin; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Dortha's life will be at Billings Funeral Home on Saturday, March 22, with visitation starting at 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service beginning at 3 p.m. Pastor Bryon Smith of Beulah Missionary Church of Elkhart will officiate. In accordance with her wishes, Dortha's body has been cremated and a private burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery on Monday, March 24.
Dortha was a homemaker and a longtime member of Beulah Missionary Church. She enjoyed needlepoint and sewing, but her best times were spent with her family and grandchildren. She was also an avid Notre Dame football fan.
