ELKHART — Dorothy N. "Dot" Coppinger Swindle, 83, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 2, following an extended illness at Eastlake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Elkhart.
She was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Campaign, Tenn., to the late Alvie L. and Agnes O. (Rodgers) Winfrey.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands Charles Coppinger and Andrew "Jack" Swindle; great-grandson Nickolas Nelson; her brothers, Sherman, Kenneth, Frank and Roy, and an infant brother Billy Winfrey.
Surviving are her children, Larry Coppinger of Appleton, Wis., Garry (Deb) Coppinger of Elkhart, Pam (Chuck) Yoder of Elkhart and Kim (Clint) Sutton of Bristol; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren (and one on the way); and two great-great grandsons.
Also surviving are her brothers, Reece (Geneva) Winfrey of Morrison, Tenn. and Ronnie Winfrey of McMinnville, Tenn., and a sister, Shirley Carter of McMinnville.
Dot, as she was known to family and friends, worked at several manufacturing facilities throughout her lifetime, retiring in the mid 1980s.
Dot was very independent and not afraid to speak her mind.
She enjoyed crafts, sewing, gardening and canning and loved to listen to old traditional country music.
Visitation for Dorothy will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart. Services celebrating Dot's life will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with calling one hour prior, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery.
Her family kindly request memorials be given in Dorothy's name to the Alzheimer's Association.
