ELKHART -- Doris Pauline Powell, 74, of 24046 Himebaugh Ave., died at 6:22 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2006) in Elkhart General Hospital after a sudden illness following routine knee surgery.

She was born March 7, 1932, in Cedar Grove, W.Va., to Norman and Ruby (Grubb) Connard. She married William V. "Bud" Powell in 1951 in Cedar Grove. He died in 1983.

Surviving are one son, Dennis E. (Barbara E.) Powell of Valparaiso; one daughter, Lydia R. Michaels of Elkhart; two grandchildren; four brothers, Leon (Tina) Connard of Winifred, W.Va., Freeman (Shirley) Connard of Hughes Creek, W.Va., and Charles and Earl B. Connard, both of Elyria, Ohio; and three sisters, Phyllis Shifflet of Clarksburg, W.Va., Nadene Moles of Copper Grove, Texas, and June Hudnall of Point Pleasant, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Victoria Powell; two brothers, George and Edwin Connard; and one sister, Imagene McClanahan.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before the 10 a.m. Saturday service, all at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor David R. Hudson, chaplain at Elkhart General Hospital, will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery.

Mrs. Powell worked for 30 years at Industrial Lamp Corp. in Elkhart until her retirement in the late 1980s. After that, she spent several years working at the Long John Silver's Restaurant on Cassopolis Street in Elkhart. She enjoyed RV camping at her site at Twin Mills, Howe, and she used to bowl at Rainbo Lanes in the women's league.

Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
