IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris J.
(Comer) Funkhouser
February 11, 1936 – November 4, 2021
Doris J. Funkhouser, 85 of Osceola passed away peacefully surrounded by family Thursday morning November 4, 2021 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka.
She was born February 11, 1936 in Elkhart to the late Dale and Evelyn (Sheetz) Comer. On July 31, 1955 she married Thomas D. Funkhouser in Elkhart whom she shared over 56 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2011. In addition to her parents and husband she was also proceeded in death by her sister Shirley Emmons.
While some referred to Doris as Ms. Doris, Mrs. Funkhouser, or Momma Funkhouser, she was Grammie to almost everyone. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and she adored them all. Whether they were blood, adopted, or honorary they were all her grandchildren. Her and Thomas never missed a football game, basketball game, band concert, or soccer match, and they never came empty handed as they always had snacks for everyone.
Members of the family left to cherish Grammie's memory include Two Daughters: Pam Bowman and Lori (Janet) Funkhouser, both of Elkhart. Two sons, Thomas (Tina) Funkhouser of Edwardsburg, Scott Funkhouser of Mishawaka, and one honorable son, Dennis Christman of Osceola;
Grandchildren: Allison (Tom) Parker, Josh Funkhouser, David, Dakotah and Dylan Bowman, Kelsey, Alissa, Aaron, and Josh Rowley, and Brittany Lundberg.
Great grandchildren: Everly and Leah Parker, Landon, Paislee, Brexley, and Brinley Lundberg, Amya*and Jolene Rowley
When Grammie was not entertaining her grandchildren with many crafts, playing store, or attending an event of her grandchildren's she enjoyed spending time outdoors, decorating her home for every Holiday, including the ceramic duck in the front yard, carving watermelons into fruit baskets, camping at Potato Creek State Park, bird watching, cooking for her family, or a large army. If anyone left Grammie's house hungry or without a snack for the road it was their own fault! Her and Thomas attended Penn Kingsman Football Games for many years. Grammie's family was always first and she would do anything for her family. She showed an unconditional, never-ending love to all and her love met you where you were, no matter what.
In her earlier years she worked at Adams and Westlake in Elkhart, although most of her life she was a home maker tending to the needs of her family. She was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America where she served on many committees and assisted in many projects. She also enjoyed volunteering and help to found the Bucket Brigade at Osceola School and Moran Elementary, a program for special needs children. She also was an active member of the PTA at Osceola School.
