ELKHART — Donald F. "Don" Schwartz Sr., 90, of Elkhart, passed away Monday, May 25, at Woodland Manor Nursing and Rehab.
He was born May 20, 1925, in Menomonie, Wis., to Benjamin J. and Frieda (Oestrick) Schwartz.
On Feb. 24, 1944, he married the late LaVonne (Crandall) Schwartz. She passed away March 15, 1993.
Survivors include three sons, Ben (Sue) Schwartz, Jeff (Karla) Schwartz and Robin Schwartz, all of Elkhart; one daughter, Marie Freeman of Elkhart; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Dan Schwartz and Donald F. Schwartz Jr.
Don served in the U.S. Army as a tank commander in the European Theater during World War II.
He later worked with the Elkhart Community School System for over 40 years, prior to his retirement in 1993.
He was a former member of DAV Chapter 19 and the American Legion.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 29, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Interment, with graveside military honors, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 1, in Rice Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Don to Memorial Children's Hospital of South Bend.
