Obituary
Donald P. (Don) Freers, 90, formerly of Elkhart, IN and Marshalltown, IA passed from his earthly home at Greencroft of Goshen, IN on January 10, 2016.
Don was born October 22, 1925 to A. J. and Elsie Freers in Muscatine, Iowa. They moved to Marshalltown in 1931 where A.J. owned Freers Ice Cream Company. Don graduated early from Marshalltown High School in 1944 in order to serve in the Army Air Corps during WWII.
On July 6 of 1946 Don married Patricia J. Phelps in Auburn, IN. After her death in January of 2005, he married Shirley (Brooks) McKee in December of 2005 in Marshalltown. She survives along with son Jeff (Janice) Freers of Elkhart, daughter Rev. Jill (Bruce) Wright of Ligonier, IN, stepdaughter Sharyn (Frank) Streicher of Madison, WI, stepson Michael McKee of Maplewood, MN, grandchildren Matt (Kristi) Freers, Molly (Brian) Shoemaker, Michael Wright and Megan Wright, step grandchildren Lindsay Streicher and Aaron Streicher. He has three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and his first wife of 58 years, Patricia.
As an owner and president of Freers Ice Cream Company of Elkhart, he was "Elkhart's ice cream maker" until he retired in 1991. He had previously worked for Host International and the Elkhart County Farm Bureau Co-Op.
Don was an accomplished woodworker, an avid golfer and former member of Maplecrest Country Club, Goshen, Elmwood Country Club, Marshalltown and Bent Oak Golf course, Elkhart where he worked after his retirement. He was a caring and loyal husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Cremation has taken place. Don's family will receive friends for one hour beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday January 23, 2016 at Ligonier United Methodist Church, 466 Townline Road, Ligonier, IN. A celebration of Don's life will follow.
Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart is assisting with arrangements. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice.
