ELKHART — Dolores J. "June" Martin, 86, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at 4 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart, following an extended illness.
She was born June 15, 1929, in Mishawaka, to the late Earl and Lorena E. (Shafer) Lee.
She married Clifford O. Martin on June 12, 1949, in South Bend. He passed away in Elkhart in 2014.
Surviving are her children, David E. (Joyce) Martin and Linda Martin, both of Elkhart; grandchildren Aaron L. Martin, Melissa A. (Jorge) Moreno and Vanessa K. (Christopher Neice) Martin; great-grandchildren Alexondria M., Spenzar E. and Keileeyanah R. Martin; and sister-in-law Ella E. Harris.
Preceding June in death were her sisters, Janice Lee, Helen Bunch, Laura Robinson and Lorena Snyder, and brother Charles Lee.
A celebration of June's life will take place beginning with a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., also at the funeral home. Pastor Carl Henry of Northside Baptist Church of Elkhart will officiate. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens of Osceola.
Prior to her marriage, June was a 1947 graduate of Plymouth High School and worked at The Associates of South Bend. She later worked at Bethel College so she could lovingly put her daughter, Linda, through school there. A devout Christian lady, June loved the Lord with all her heart and spoke with Him daily until her last day. She attended Cedar Road Missionary Church in Mishawaka, Osceola Church of the Brethren and Northside Baptist Church of Elkhart. She served in various degrees as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, church board secretary and missionary correspondent.
While she enjoyed sewing and gardening and was an avid baker and accomplished cake decorator, she will be best remembered for her great love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
