ELKHART -- Dolores Collins, 90, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Elkhart General Hospital.
She was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Camaguey, Cuba, to the late Victor and Maria (Yermat) Gutierrez. She married Cleon Collins. He passed away in 1971. Seven siblings are also deceased.
Surviving are her sons, Victor Hugh Collins of Elkhart and George Collins of Tomball, Texas. Also surviving are two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a brother, Ubaldo (Esther) Gutierrez of Lakeland, Fla.
Dolores worked as a nurse and a caregiver and was a founding member of LaCasa in Goshen, where she served as coordinator of activities. She was also appointed to the Governor's Commission on the Status of Spanish Heritage Peoples for the State of Indiana. She formerly attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and enjoyed reading, gardening and crocheting.
Her request was cremation and burial will be later at Walkerton Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Billings Funeral Home.
