ELKHART: Dennis Kent Lyon, 77, was born on March 29, 1943 in Elkhart, to the late Jack and Edith (Landis) Lyon; he died Wednesday morning, June 24 at his home in Elkhart. He married his high school sweetheart Barbara Joan Zimmerman in 1961 and they shared 59 years of marriage together. He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1961 and attended Tri-State College.

He is survived by his wife Barb; children, Jeffrey (Theresa) Lyon and Tracy (Paul) Gleissner; five grandchildren, Steven Gleissner, Allison (Derrick) DeShone, Bradley (Samar) Lyon, Melissa Gleissner, and Hillary (Dustin) Dreifurst; also his five great grandchildren Harrison and Lily Dreifurst, Hayden, Maddox and Tatum DeShone; brother Timothy Lyon, sister Rhonda (David) Powell as well as several nieces and nephews.

Dennis began his surveying career with Ray Pharis Engineering, and then became owner of G & L Surveying. He sold the business to Progressive Engineering and continued fieldwork surveying. He retired in 2015 from the Elkhart County Surveyor's Office. He was serving on the Board of Zoning Appeals as a hearing officer and as a member of the Planning Commission.  With Barb, he owned The Hair Barn for 15 years.  He was a charter member of the Elkhart Evening Optimist Club and a member of St. Mary's of the Annunciation Catholic Church.

The family will receive family and friends on Thursday, July 9, from 6-8 pm. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart and also 1 hour prior to the 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial Friday, July 10, at St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 411 W. Vistula St. Bristol, IN 46507
