IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dennis R.
Gardner
October 21, 1942 – April 9, 2008
Dennis Ross Gardner, "D.G." of Elkhart, passed away as he wished, peacefully at home, on Wednesday, April 9, 2008. At his side were his family, closest friends and beloved basset hound, Simon.
Denny was born on Oct. 21, 1942, in Elkhart to Ross and Betty (Pennington) Gardner. His parents preceded him in death. He spent the last 35 years with his soul mate, companion and wife, Pamela Sue (Ellis) Gardner.
Others he leaves to cherish his memory are three daughters, Melissa L. Beaver, Bloomington, and Amy J. Gardner and Lisa L. Ellis, both of Elkhart; two sons, Scott R. Gardner of Jupiter, Fla., and Robert Gardner of Newfoundland, Conn.; a sister, Linda G. (Ronnie) Parker of Sarasota, Fla.; a brother, Michael (Shirley) Gardner, Punta Gorda, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Denny graduated from Elkhart High School in 1961 and started working a week later in the composing room at Truth Publishing Co. He was a journeyman printer and also served as night composing room foreman. He retired after 45 years, ending his career in the prepress department. Denny loved working for The Truth. He said his job and printing were his pride and passion.
Denny was a member of the CWA/ITU Local 128, the Elkhart Moose Lodge and the Elkhart Eagles Aerie.
Denny enjoyed many activities: playing with his grandchildren, camping, grilling on his barbecue, farming, gardening flowers and vegetables, fishing on his pontoon boat with his family and dogs, skydiving and especially, motorcycling, a passion he shared with his family, traveling from coast to coast. He loved Notre Dame and NASCAR and was an avid collector of Mickey Mouse paraphernalia.
Denny recently said, "I feel very fortunate because I can say I have been able to do most of what I had hoped to in my lifetime." His two unfulfilled wishes were to ride in a hot-air balloon and to own a sailboat.
He was a friend to all and enjoyed helping people in need.
Cremation has taken place per his wishes. There will be a memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be given to St. David's Church, Elkhart, the Humane Society of Elkhart County and to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
