April 5, 1957 – July 16, 2022

Obituary

David Alonzo "Dave" Herron, 65, of Elkhart, passed away unexpectedly at his home on the morning of Saturday, July 16, 2022. Lovingly known as "Papaw" by his multitude of grandchildren, Dave was born in Mishawaka on April 5, 1957 and was the son of the late James Ellis and Oneida Willodean Herron. He is survived by his lovely wife, Kathy (White) Herron, who is at home.

Also surviving David are his sons Chris (Linzy) Herron of Leander, Texas and Ben (Kim) Herron of Mishawaka; daughters Lindsey (Nicholas) Hanlon of Osceola and Courtney (Andrew) Roberts of Mishawaka; brothers Robert Herron of Mishawaka and Jamie (Debbie) Herron of Knightstown, Indiana; sisters Carolyn Burks and Dottie Herron both of Mishawaka, and Barb (Tom) Cox of Grantsburg, Wisconsin, and Papaw's "multitude", including Hudson, Reagan, Sadie and Lincoln Hanlon and Ava, Paislee, Graedy, Holden, Griffin and Hayes Herron and Blakely Roberts; as well as a loving host of extended family, friends, neighbors and generations of students and staff in the PHM school system who came across Dave's smiling face at some point during their education. Preceding David in death is a sister, Kathy Herron; a former spouse and mother to Lindsey and Courtney, Cynthia Jo (Hunsberger) Herron; and an infant daughter, Elizabeth Ann Herron.

A gathering of David's family and friends will take place at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 4 – 7 pm. Then, on Thursday, July 21, 2022, the staff and congregation at Grace Bible Church, 1700 Edwardsburg Ave., Elkhart, will host David's Homegoing Service at 1:00 pm, with visitation beginning there at noon. Pastor Kyle Grant will officiate the services along with David's son, Chris, who will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow at Olive East Cemetery in Jimtown.

David racked up nearly 30 years in the Penn-Harris-Madison school district, serving on the custodial and maintenance staff as well as serving as an IHSAA referee for basketball, volleyball and softball games. Whether in the hallways or out on the court floor, everyone knew and liked Dave because of the naturally friendly rapport that he had with others.

Dave's love for sports spilled over into his personal life as well, and his weekends were generally filled with Cubs, Alabama and Notre Dame games. (We wonder if Dave yelled at the referees…) He was an avid fan of classic westerns, loved taking long walks and was the best biscuits and gravy maker. His specialty chocolate gravy would knock your socks off, and he was pretty talented with a grill as well.

Dave was a loving and devoted husband, dad and papaw, and his children were his pride and joy. He loved them dearly and tried to be as involved as he could with their lives. He was also a very spiritual man, and served as an usher at Grace Bible Church, as well as being a part of the Men's Prayer Breakfast.

Friends and family wishing to make a donation in Dave's memory may do so by donating to Grace Bible Church or Cornerstone Baptist Church, both of Elkhart. Additionally, please be sure to thoroughly browse Dave's obituary page, as you are able to leave condolences and memories, post photographs on his memory wall, and order other funerary items in regard to the family.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
