He was born Sept. 30, 1944, in Elkhart, to Claude L. and Frances (Meadows) Canell Jr.

He is survived by one son, David L. Canell Jr. of Elkhart; two daughters, Andrea M. and Nicole A. Canell, both of Elkhart; and one brother, Claude L. Canell III of Oxnard, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Rollo L. Canell; and one sister, Mary L. Canell.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the 1 p.m. Monday funeral service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. The Rev. Edgar Allen and the Rev. Larry Lund, both of Bethel Assembly of God, will officiate. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by Elkhart DAV 19 and U.S. Navy Burial Honor Detail.

Mr. Canell retired from the U.S. Navy and worked for Workforce Development and Elkhart Products. He was a member of Bethel Assembly of God and Elkhart DAV 19, and enjoyed camping, fishing, reading and spending time with his children, brother, and his nephew and wife. He also loved playing with his dogs.

Mr. Canell was a seven-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Navy.
