Obituary

Darrell Glenn Collier, 77, of Bristol, passed away peacefully within the comfort of his own home amongst his family on Friday, June 14, 2024 at 2:41 pm while convalescing from an extended illness. He was born in Evansville on September 15, 1946 to the late William T. and Ruth L. (Agee) Collier. On May 12, 1967, Darrell married his sweetheart Judy C. Roberts in Elkhart, and she survives him at home.

Also surviving Darrell is his son, William D. Collier of Bristol; his daughter Joy (Kevin) McCallister of Osceola; brother Bruce Collier of Summerfield, Florida; sister Pam (Mike) Pontius of Elkhart; grandsons Kamen (Deserae Adams) McCallister and Bryce McCallister and great grandson Kaicen McCallister. Darrell was preceded in death by his older brother, William H. Collier. Darrell has a loving host of extended family, neighbors and good friends, including his relatives down in southern Indiana and Kentucky, his faithful dog "Buddy" the Jack Russell and a roaming band of neighborhood kids who loved Darrell dearly and assisted in the rendering of military honors at the house as Darrell began his journey to the funeral home.

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart is honored to host Darrell's homegoing celebrations on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, beginning with a gathering of family and friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Services will follow at 1:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Jeremy Sarber, with burial following at Olive Cemetery. Military Honors will be rendered there by the US Army Funeral Honor Guard and the Elkhart Veterans Honor Guard.

Darrell was a lifelong truck driver and he spent many of those years as an over-the-road operator.  As the kids got older, he made his routes a bit shorter so he could be home with his family. He finally wound up driving deliveries at Norco Industries in Elkhart for around 7 years until he retired in 2008.

We should also mention that Darrell was an epic traveler, and whether it was through the windshield of a truck or with his beloved family, Darrell loved to get up and go. Although his retirement years saw him returning out west more often, his family swore that throughout his life he visited more places than Johnny Cash could list in his song, "I've Been Everywhere, Man".

Darrell loved his county dearly and was the quintessential patriot. He served honorably in the US Army during the Vietnam War era, but was stationed stateside for the most part staffing Nike Defensive Missile Bases which were located throughout the United States. He was also an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish whenever he got the chance. He was also a die-hard Green Bay Packers Fan and loved to catch all of the "Star Trek" reruns. Darrel was a wonderful golfer and even received a medal for getting four holes in one shot.

Finally, it should be mentioned that Darrell cherished his Lord and his family most of all. His loving and open heart befriended him to just about anyone, and he enjoyed attending church at Bristol's New Life Church when his health was better. He also loved the time he was able to spend with his family, and never needed an excuse to shower his love and affection on an "unsuspecting" relative. He always looked forward to the family's annual hog roast; not just for the great food, but to catch up, reconnect, and enjoy the company of his favorite group of people!
