Dr. Dale R. South Jr., age 96, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, October 20, 2022 in the comfort of his home and family. Dale was born on November 26, 1925 in Bethel, Ohio.

After graduating high school at the age of 16, he was accepted to Ohio State University where he attended for one semester and then transferred to the University of Kentucky in the ROTC program. He was drafted into the Army and served from February 14, 1944, until his honorable discharge on June 5, 1946. He was sent to England right after D-Day where he served as a combat engineer. He then returned to Ohio after his tour was over and then completed his medical degree at Ohio State University. In 1949 he met the love of his life Mary Katheryn "Kay" Clymer on a blind date. They were married and moved to Troy Ohio, where he began his career as a primary care physician. In 1968 he was approached by a local physician and the family moved to Elkhart in 1968, where he began his practice at Simpson Medical Group and later Elkhart General Hospital, until his retirement in 1992. After retirement, he continued to serve the community by volunteering his services by doing children's school physicals and volunteering his time teaching children to read in the local elementary schools and other various charities in the Elkhart and Goshen area. Dale is a life member of the Masonic Lodge in Bethel Ohio, as well as a lifelong faithful member of Ohio State University Alumni Association. Dale was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping up on world events and watching the good old TV shows.

Dale is survived by his children, Susan D. South, and Daniel (Sandra) South, five loving grandchildren, five great grandchildren: several nieces and nephews and his best friend Christine Rice.

In addition to his parents and wife Kay, Dale was preceded in death by his son Mark Edward South.

Services celebrating the life of Dr. Dale R. South Jr. will begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart. Pastor Jeremy Sarber will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. In honoring his wishes, cremation was chosen, and both he and Kay will be buried in a private cemetery in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery at a later date. Dr South will have military honors rendered by the United Stated Army Funeral Honor Guard.
