Claude R.
Gunter II
March 12, 1963 – March 21, 2026
Claude R. “Chip” Gunter II
Claude R. “Chip” Gunter II, 63, of Elkhart, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 12, 1963, to Claude Gunter I and Karen (South) Gunter, who survive him.
Chip lived life on his own terms—full of adventure, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the simple moments. His presence could light up any room, and his energy was truly unforgettable. Through his stories, his humor, and the way he made others feel seen and valued, he left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Above all, he loved his family fiercely and unconditionally. His love was constant, steady, and full—something that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him best. His daughters were truly his everything, and he carried immense pride and love for them in all that he did.
Chip is also survived by his daughters, Allyson (Joe) Bryant, Lauren (Shawn) Browning, and Sydney (Manuel) Gunter; grandchildren, Aiden, Raigen, Molly, and Gunner, who he loved more than anything in this world; siblings, Christopher (Ann Marie) Gunter, Tamera (Brian) Smittendorf, and Katheryn Mudica; and a host of nieces and nephews whom he cared for deeply. He is also survived by his parents, Claude Gunter I and Karen (South) Gunter.
Chip was a loving father and grandfather who was a seasoned HVAC specialist technician as well as a service manager. He excelled in the industry, earning certifications and accomplishments throughout his career, with over 25 years of experience. He could fix just about anything and enjoyed working on cars and winter skiing while listening to classic rock in his spare time. In his early years, he attended St. Thomas the Apostle Church and School and served as an altar boy during funeral services. He also enjoyed water skiing.
Chip was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and sponsored many people in his community. He enjoyed all animals and especially loved going to zoos, finding joy in the wonder of wildlife.
While his absence leaves an immeasurable void, his family finds comfort in knowing he is no longer in pain and is at peace. As his favorite song reminds us, “when I get where I’m going,” we trust he has found that peace. His spirit will live on in the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
A celebration of life will take place on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 5–8 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart, Indiana. In accordance with Chip’s wishes, cremation was chosen. Memorial donations may be given to the Castleman Disease Collaborative Network, P.O. Box 3614, Paso Robles, CA 93447 (please make checks payable to “Castleman Disease Collaborative Network”).
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
