Obituary

ELKHART -- Clarence L. Chupp Sr., 76, of Elkhart, passed away at 6:45 a.m. Monday, May 16, 2011, at Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born in Goshen on Feb. 11, 1935, to Samuel N. and Ada (Miller) Chupp, who preceded him in death, along with a brother, Richard Chupp.

He married Maria L. Duby in Elkhart on June 21, 1975.

She survives at home, along with two sons, Clarence L. "J.R." Chupp Jr. of New Paris and Robert Chupp of Elkhart; two daughters, Kim (Gilbert) Castillo and Sharon (Timothy) Miller, both of Elkhart; two sisters, Mary Edna Miller and Oleta (Chuck) Bontrager, both of Goshen; grandchildren, April (Joseph) Black of South Bend, Erin (Kyle) Ptasienski of Terre Haute, Dawn Miller of Osceola and Anthony Castillo of Elkhart; and great-grandchildren, Claire Black, Lilyana Ptasienski and Arihanna Taylor.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, May 18, 2011, at Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart. A funeral will be held there the following day, Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 11 p.m. with visitation an hour prior. Pastor Gary Sheets will officiate, and burial will follow at Miller Cemetery in Middlebury.

Clarence was known as the "bread man" for most of his life, working for the Honey Crust Bread Company in Goshen in his earlier years and retiring from the Butternut Bread Company in Elkhart in 1997 after 28 years there. He also enjoyed attending auctions, woodworking, traveling, antique lamps and clocks and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a member of Aladdin's "Knights of the Mystic Light" Union.

Memorial contributions may be given to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
