ELKHART -- Clarence Burgess died Wednesday (June 16, 2010) at 8:30 p.m. in his Elkhart home after an extended illness. He was 76.
He was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Cedar Grove, W.Va., to Harry and Mina (Thomas) Burgess.
He is survived by his significant other, Martha Young, who resides at home. Also surviving are sons Tracy A. Burgess and Darrell Young, both of Elkhart, Tim A. Burgess of Swartz Creek, Mich., and Doug Pettit; daughters Tammy Burgess of Port Huron, Mich., Carolyn DeKoster of Elkhart and Patricia Young of West Virginia; brothers Ralph Burgess of Texas, Kenneth Burgess of West Virginia and Henry Burgess of Elkhart; sisters Gertrude Seabeck of South Bend, Zelma Burgess of Texas and Joyce Breeden of West Virginia; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
No services have been planned. In accordance with his wishes, Clarence is to be cremated and returned to West Virginia for burial at a later date.
Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, is handling arrangements.
Clarence founded Bonded Roofing of Elkhart in the late 1950s, a family business still in operation today. He also was owner of Burgess Limousine Service of Elkhart, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
