Obituary

ELKHART — Chester "Chet" Johnson Jr., 79, of Elkhart, passed away Friday, June 19, at Elkhart General Hospital.

He was born Nov. 14, 1935, in Elkhart to Chester Johnson Sr. and Alice L. (Carr) Johnson.

On Sept. 13, 1958, he married the late Frances A. Johnson. She passed away March 10, 2004.

Survivors include one daughter, Cindy (Randy) Mockler of Middlebury; one brother, Warren (Dorothy) Johnson of Elkhart; one grandson, Christopher (Markee) Mockler of Robinson, Ill.; two great-grandsons, Shawn and Hunter; and one step-great-granddaughter, Anna.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters, and four brothers.

Chester was employed as a punch press operator at Johnson Controls for many years prior to his retirement.

He often enjoyed spending time at his home at Jellystone Park in Pierceton, traveling, watching Western movies and baseball. Chester was an avid Civil War enthusiast and vinyl record collector and especially enjoyed '50s music.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Funeral services will immediately follow. Pastor Leroy Chaney Jr. will officiate. Interment will take place in Rice Cemetery.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Haque, Dr. Younus and the sixth floor nursing staff at Elkhart General Hospital. They would also like to thank his neighbors, David and Vicky Jellison, for all the loving care they gave to allow Chester to continue to live at home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Elkhart County in memory of Chester.
