Obituary

Mrs. Charlotte Ann "Char" Winer, 66, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at Greencroft in Goshen on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at 8:15 am following an extended illness. She was born in South Bend on December 6, 1955 to the late Edward and Evelyn (Sherman) Henry. On August 2, 1980, she married James J. "Jim" Winer of Elkhart, who survives her at home. Jim would say that although they'd been married for 41 years, he had the "hots" for her since somewhere back in 1974. Love springs eternal, Jim!

Also surviving Char are her children James J. "Jay" (Jessica) Winer, Jr. of Elkhart, Christina "Chris" (Craig Winters) Winer of North Redington Beach, Florida and Jennifer (Dirk Lester) Winer of Elkhart, as well as grandchildren Sawyer, Mason and Landry Winer. She is also survived by a host of loving extended family and good friends.

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart is honored to host Char's homegoing services, beginning with a visitation there on Saturday, December 18, 2021 from 10 am until noon, followed by a remembrance service starting at 12:00 noon. Billings Chaplain Pastor Jeremy Sarber will officiate and burial will follow the services at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger.

Char worked in sales for many years at Stephenson's Clothing Store in Elkhart. She also enjoyed being active within her community and was involved with Junior Achievement for many years through the Jaycees. Whether it was Christmas baskets, food drives, dinners or bake sales, Char loved being able to help others. She also volunteered to help with all types of Montessori fund raisers as well, although, once again, Jim would say she was the brains of these projects while he was "recruited" as the chauffeur and head "gopher". Love springs eternal, Jim!

At home, Char enjoyed watching movies (especially Gone With The Wind) and curling up to a good Stephen King book. She also enjoyed visiting zoos and museums (she was the cultured side of marriage), spending time with her children and grandchildren, and loving on her two furry household critters, Christopher the (evil master of the household) cat and Rex the dog. Incidentally, Rex is kind of the neighborhood dog there in White Pigeon and is currently hanging out with his favorite neighbor lady as he works through his grief.

Char was always proud of her husband's long-time involvement with the Osolo Township Fire Department in their earlier years, and she assisted with all kinds of departmental activities and served on the Ladies Auxiliary for many years there.

Finally, it should be mentioned that Char was a prolific shopper who operated more or less on a professional level. Anytime she thought Jim had too much money for his own good, she would graciously relieve him of said burden and save the day by hunting for bargains! Love springs eternal, Jim!

Memorial donations may be to the charity of one's choice. Friends and relatives are encouraged to read the obit and leave condolences, memories and/or pictures of Char by clicking "Tribute Wall" on her obituary page on the funeral home's website and then following the prompts.
