ELKHART — Charles W. Works Sr., 78, of Elkhart, passed away at Elkhart General Hospital at 3:25 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, following a sudden illness.
He was born Jan. 17, 1936, in Canalou, Mo., to the late William and Letha (Banks) Works.
He later married Mattie M. Jacobs in Sikeston, Mo., in 1956. She survives him at home in Elkhart.
Surviving to cherish his memories are his sons, Jason J. (Sheena) and Charles W. Jr. (Lydia) Works, both of Elkhart, and Todd A. (Patty) Works of Cassopolis, Mich.; brothers Charlie (Ethel) and Harvey (Gloria) Works, both of Decatur, Ill., and Samuel Works of Austin, Texas; sisters Genevieve Works of Oklahoma City and Faye Hayes of Decatur; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
A celebration of Charles' life will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 802 W. Garfield Ave., Elkhart, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Danny Brown will officiate. In accordance with the family's wishes, Charles' body is to be cremated following services.
Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart has been assisting the family with arrangements.
Charles worked as a local carpenter and stone mason most of his life. He was also a very active member of Pilgrim Rest MBC, where he sang in the men's choir and served as a church trustee. An avid sports enthusiast, Charles enjoyed playing softball and fishing, as well as working around the house and yard and barbecuing.
