ELKHART — Charles Ray Skaggs, 74, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday evening, May 30, at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born Aug. 11, 1938, in Glasgow, W.Va., to Herbert A. and Didama J. (Elswick) Skaggs.
Survivors include his son, Michael (Brenda) Skaggs of South Bend; daughter Sheila (Jeff) Gordy of Elkhart; sister Brenda Cutter of Charleston, W.Va.; two grandsons, Ryan Skaggs of Mishawaka and Dylan Gordy of Elkhart; granddaughter Rachael McNair of Elkhart; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Herb Skaggs; and two sisters, Lois Pauley and Jean Spaulding.
Charles was a graduate of East Bank High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956-58. He was employed as a plant foreman at Northern Box Co. for nearly 40 years prior to his retirement. Charles enjoyed spending his retirement years shopping for antiques, spending time with his grandchildren and drinking coffee at Bristol Street Café with friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be for two hours prior to the 7 p.m. memorial service Monday, June 3, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor Jeff Lewis, 3 Cross Ministries Church, will officiate. Cremation will be at Altera Cremation Services. His cremated remains will be placed in Prairie Street Veterans Tower at a later date.
