ELKHART — Charles E. King, 71, of Elkhart and formerly of Chicago, went home to be with the Lord at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012.
He was born Oct. 7, 1941, in Yazoo, Miss.
As a young man, he moved to Chicago and then to Cassopolis, Mich., before settling in Elkhart in 2000.
He leaves behind his son, Daniel "Danny" Parker of Cincinnati; stepchildren Charles, Derrick, Arnice, Melvina and Arlana Baines, all of Chicago; granddaughter Danielle Parker of Chicago; 16 stepgrandchildren; 21 great-stepgrandchildren; godsons Vincent "Poo" Murry Jr. and Versean Murry of Elkhart; his longtime friend and caregiver, Karen Murry; as well as a host of cousins and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Johnson; his brother, Golden King; his significant other, Clovese Baines; and a stepson, James Baines Jr.
Charles accepted Christ as his personal savior at a young age. He was a member of Greater Works Outreach in Elkhart. He worked as a mechanic for years and had achieved several certifications.
He enjoyed Western and action movies, sitting and talking with friends, singing and writing poetry. He was a friend to many and loved by all who knew him.
In accordance to Charles' wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial celebration of his life will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Open Gate Praise and Deliverance Temple, 137 Division St., Elkhart.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart.
