TERRE HAUTE -- Charles "Chuck" Freeman, 86, of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday afternoon (Dec. 20, 2008) at Southwood Health & Rehabilitation Center in Terre Haute, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's.

Mr. Freeman was born Nov. 2, 1922 in Sanford, Ind., to the late Harry and Mabel (Holdaway) Freeman. On Sept. 15, 1951, in Terre Haute, he married the former Mary Ellen Wedgewood.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen Freeman of Terre Haute; a son Charles E. "Charlie" (Sandy) Freeman of Riley; and his daughter, Sally A. (Brad) Billings of Elkhart. Surviving as well are his four grandchildren, Joshua and Ashlee Freeman of Riley and Drew and Evan Billings of Elkhart.

Chuck was preceded in death by a sister, Jean McGough, and his half-sister, Hilda Long.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the DeBaun Funeral Home in Terre Haute, where the funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Graveside services and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Terre Haute.

Chuck worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Terre Haute for 47 years. After he retired he spent many hours at the corner gas station greeting folks and would still go to the "plant" to make coffee for the drivers and visit with the office staff. He enjoyed recycling, collecting Coca-Cola items and going to the Coca-Cola employee Christmas parties and reunions. Chuck was very proud of his grandchildren and all of their accomplishments.
