He was born Sept. 16, 1926, in South Bend, to Shannan K. and Eva A. (Dugan) Clements. On July 22, 1991, in Elkhart, he married Margarita Castaneda Vier.
She survives, along with six sons, Shannan K. (Jane) Clements of Monroe, N.C., Walter R. Clements of Bristol, Robert M. Clements of Middlebury, and Cy G. (Wilma) Clements, Earl R. Vier Jr. and James D. Vier, all of Elkhart; two daughters, Marie A. (Kevin) Botts of Elkhart and Dulcie L. (Joshua) Stevens of South Bend; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Shannan K. (Marion) Clements of Dunlap, James (Chris) Wallace of Elkhart and John Wallace of Davison, Mich.
He was preceded in death by one son, Albert L. Clements; one grandson, Wayne Clements; and one granddaughter, who died in infancy.
Friends may call one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Friday funeral service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. The Rev. Bill Sullivan of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and Vanette Kashmer of the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery. The U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard and Elkhart's DAV Chapter 19 will render military honors at the graveside service.
Mr. Clements was owner/operator of Clements' Garage in Elkhart. He started the business in 1959 on Main Street, and retired in 1996. He was a member of the American Legion and an avid car enthusiast who raced stock cars in the early 1950s. He also enjoyed camping, traveling, spending time outdoors, listening to Loretta Lynn and watching John Wayne and Eddie Murphy.
Mr. Clements was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 740th Tank Battalion just after World War II had ended.
