ELKHART — Charles W. Bender, 72, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday (June 28, 2012) at 6:35 p.m. at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born Nov. 19, 1939, in Elkhart to Milo T. and Wanda (Mercer) Bender. On July 23, 1976, he married Karen H. (Brothers) Bender in Elkhart.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Jeff (Laurie) Bender of Fishers; a daughter, Carrie Martinez of Elkhart; two sisters, Betty Jo (Richard) Brown and Jean Merry, both of Elkhart; two grandchildren, Justin Martinez of South Bend and Kayle Bender of Fishers; and a great-grandson, Noah Martinez of South Bend.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Milo D. Bender, Thomas Bender and William Cox; his stepfather, Thomas Cox; and his stepmother, Wilma Bender.
Charlie was employed at Air Equipment, Elkhart, in the maintenance department for several years before his retirement. He was a member of Elkhart Moose Lodge 599, DAV Post 19 and Bristol American Legion Post 143. Charlie enjoyed spending time with friends at church and the Moose, riding his motorcycles and having his dog "Kasey" by his side whenever possible.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the noon funeral service on Tuesday, July 3, at New Hope United Methodist Church, 28765 C.R. 4, Elkhart. Pastor Lee Campbell will officiate. Interment will follow at Five Points Cemetery in Edwardsburg, Mich.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Hope United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
