ELKHART -- Calvin Monroe David Sr., 84, of 1001 W. Hively Ave., died Sunday (May 24, 2009) in Golden Living Center.
He was born Oct. 29, 1924, in Huntingdon, Pa., to Victor Luther and Mary Ida (Dixon) David. On Oct. 4, 1969, he married Betty Jane Darrigan in Elkhart.
She survives along with three daughters, Mary J. (David) Emmerick of Fort Garland, Colo., and Cheryl (Timothy) Hoffman and Kelly (Shanon) Stark, both of Elkhart; one son, Calvin M. (Deborah) David Jr. of Port Charlotte, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Perdetti; his former spouse, Margaret David; and 11 siblings.
Mr. David retired from Patrick Metals. He had worked at Continental Can Co. for 14 years and as a driver for G.L. Perry. He was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church, Elkhart. He was an avid football fan and bowled in a league for several years. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.
Mr. David served on the SS John C. Breckenridge in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received a Bronze Star and was honorably discharged in 1945.
Friends may call from noon until the 2 p.m. Friday funeral service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor James Young of Word of Life Fellowship, Elkhart, will officiate. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy and DAV Chapter 19 at the funeral home after the service. Cremation will take place, with burial in Rice Cemetery at a later date.
