Obituary

Ms. Bobbie Jean "Lil' Mama" Redmond, 78, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2020 at 9:45 am following an apparent sudden illness. She was born in Tutwiler, MS. on February 11, 1942 and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Rosie B. Harris. Left to cherish her memory is her spouse, James T. Redmond of Elkhart. Also grieving the passing of their dear mother are children Nathan (Flora) Harris, Jerry (Lisa) Harris, Sarah Army-Redmond (Preceded her in death); Rosie B. Redmond, all of Elkhart; Robert Redmond (Significant other-Tanya Pierce) of Indianapolis, IN; siblings Stan Harris and Helen Harris, both of Minneapolis, MN and Joyce Harris of St. Louis, MO; godsons Melvin Townsend and Daniel House, both of Elkhart; 18 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and a host of loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family,  good friends and neighbors, including Ollie Williams, Donna and Francisco and family, who always stopped by to make sure Bobbie was OK. Bobbie's life will be celebrated on Friday, August 21, 2020 at 12:00 noon at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Elkhart, with viewing beginning there at 11 am. Pastor Gregory Gary; Pastor Clarence Jones (Community Missionary Baptist Church), and Bobbie's son, the Rev. Robert Redmond, will officiate and cremation will follow in accordance with Bobbie's wishes. She worked nearly 20 years at E.R. Carpenter in Elkhart as a laminator, then went on to provide comfort care for the elderly at several area nursing facilities. She was employed at Eastlake Terrace Senior Living Center in Elkhart at the time of her passing. Bobbie was a self-made, self-taught lady who successfully raised a household of loving, respectful children by making sacrifices in her personal life so her children could thrive and get ahead. She also adored her grands and great grands and did whatever she could for them, though always mindful of the concepts of self-motivation and respect. Her selfless attitude didn't stop with her family, either; Bobbie absolutely loved ALL of God's creatures and always had a collection of furry friends and "critters' at the house. She was what many may call a "social butterfly", always enjoying her visits with her friends and making trips to the Moose lodge whenever she could. As a matter of fact, Bobbie became so involved with her Latino neighbors she actually picked up semi-fluent Spanish and developed a taste for south-of-the-border cuisine!  She was also a long-time member of Community Missionary Baptist Church of Elkhart and an avid supporter of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame! Family and friends are encouraged to browse the funeral home's website, where one can share the obituary, leave condolences for the family, order flowers, get directions and more. Memorial donations in Bobbie's memory may be given to a no-kill animal shelter of one's choice.
