Mrs. Stewart, 86, of 1001 W. Hively Ave., died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (April 10, 2007) at Beverly Living Center in Elkhart. At her request, the body has been cremated and burial will take place at a later date at Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart.
Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart, was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Stewart was born on June 6, 1920, to George and Dorothy (McCutchin) Vredingburgh. She married Paul Perry Stewart on April 28, 1939, in Elkhart. He died on Oct. 13, 1968, in Elkhart. Surviving are two daughters, Lisa (Matthew) Van Dyke and Mary Stewart-Walker, both of Elkhart; a son, Bill of Elkhart; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Chuck (Linda) Vredingburgh of Elkhart and George (Joan) Vredingburgh of Milwaukee. A brother, Ray Vredingburgh, and three sisters, Mary Fox, Helen Minnes and infant Charlotte Vredingburgh, are deceased.
Mrs. Stewart worked as a clerk for the Concord/Osolo Township Relief Office, which at one time were in the same office. After the two offices split, she worked for the Osolo Township Relief Office, from which she retired in 1991 after 12 years of service. She was a former member of Simpson United Methodist Church and served as a crossing guard in Elkhart from 1968 to 1975. Mrs. Stewart enjoyed needlework and crossword puzzles.
