Celebrating the Life of Betty Jo Moore

September 16, 1934 – October 29, 2026

Betty Jo Moore, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and cherished family traditions.

Born at home on September 16, 1934, Betty was one of twelve children born to the late John and Pauline Ellsworth. Though born at home, she made her official medical debut when she was first seen in a hospital on September 22, 1934—a fun piece of family history she always held dear.

On May 3, 1952, Betty married the love of her life, Richard Moore. Together, they built a life centered around family, faith, and community. A lifelong resident of Elkhart, Betty’s deep connection to her roots was evident in every chapter of her life—she lived just two streets away from her childhood home and right next door to two of her siblings, ensuring that family was never more than a few steps away.

As a dedicated homemaker, Betty’s heart and life revolved around her family. She was legendary in the kitchen, best known for her unforgettable deviled eggs, homemade macaroni and cheese, yummy Christmas cookies, delicious graham cracker pie and comforting beef and noodles. Her home was the natural gathering place for generations. Up until a few years ago, her annual Fourth of July picnics were a summer highlight, and her annual Christmas dinners routinely brought together 27 or more children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren under one roof for food, laughter, and celebration.

Betty’s faith was a guided anchor throughout her life. She was an active member of the Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church, where she faithfully served as a Deacon. She was also a dedicated member of the Edwardsburg Presbyterian Women’s Association, where she was famously part of the crew that prepared the church’s beloved signature Hot Chicken Salad for the annual Salad Smorgasbord and Style Show.

She is survived by her loving children: Tanda (David) Stiffler, Paula Moore, and Gary (Lori) Moore; her sister, Joan Bessinger; along with her 8 adored grandchildren and 8 cherished great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense pride and joy to her life. Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Moore; her parents, John and Pauline Ellsworth; and 10 of her brothers and sisters. Betty Jo Moore will be remembered for her generous heart, her warm hospitality, her strong faith, and the unconditional love she gave so freely to her family. Her spirit lives on in every family gathering, every shared meal, and every fond memory held in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
