SOUTH BEND — Betty Jane Heeter, 89, of Wood Ridge Assisted Living Complex, South Bend, went to heaven at 5:20 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, surrounded by family, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Heeter, the daughter of the late Ralph and Blanche (Truex) Miller, was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Granger.
On July 3, 1943, in South Bend, Betty married the love of her life, George Glenwood Heeter. He preceded her in death.
She is survived by four sons, Ronald G. (Sharon) of Indiana, Lonnie G. (Bonnie) of Mishawaka, Dennis L. of Goshen and George R. (Sandy) of South Bend. She had four daughters, Sandra K. Heeter (deceased), Mrs. Donald (Diane M.) Keirnan of Cassopolis, Mich., Mrs. Terry (Penny S.) Boenne of Mishawaka and Bonnie L. Gerald, of Rockingham, N.C; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Miller (deceased), Richard Miller (deceased) and Larry Miller (Judy) of Granger; and two sisters, Dolly Rice and Phyllis Schimmel, both deceased.
Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. A celebration of life service will immediately follow at 7 p.m. The Rev. Irv Mize will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Salem Cemetery, Granger.
Betty was baptized and lived her life as a Christian; she attended Granger Community Church. She worked at Ball Band in Mishawaka for many years, where she earned the honor of "Queen of Ball Band," which she would never let you forget. She was a social butterfly and loved people, serving them while working later in life at Toasties, Walt's and Hilton's restaurants in the South Bend area.
Mostly, she loved her family and furry companion Dora. She loved spending time with all of her children and grandchildren. Her legacy will live on through her never-ending smile and her unconditional love for all.
